Dan

A cornerstone of Danish offshore production. The Dan field, discovered in 1971 and brought onstream in 1972, was Denmark’s first oil-producing field and remains a cornerstone of the country’s offshore energy production. Over its lifetime, the field has contributed close to 26 percent of total Danish oil output.

Overview

Dan is one of the largest chalk fields in the Danish North Sea, producing oil and gas from the Ekofisk and Tor formations. These reservoirs are characterised by high porosity but low permeability, with oil reservoir beneath gas cap.

The field is structured as a domal trap, divided by a major fault into two main areas (A-block and B-block), with additional development in the West Flank area between Dan and Halfdan.

Field Development

The Dan field has been developed in multiple phases over more than five decades:

Today, water injection is the primary recovery mechanism, supported by ongoing reservoir monitoring and optimisation.

In total, approximately 126 wells have been drilled, with around 40 active oil producers and 30+ active water injectors supporting production.

Infrastructure and Exports

The field is centred around the Dan Hub, which includes:

Hydrocarbons are processed at the central Dan facilities. Oil is exported to Gorm, and gas is exported to Tyra to be further exported to Netherlands or Denmark.

Satellite Fields

Kraka is a tie-back development producing from the fractured chalk, Ekofisk formation. The field located approximately 8 km southeast of Dan. The field came onstream in 1991 and continues to contribute to the Dan Hub production system.

Regnar was brought onstream in 1993 and now decommissioned.

Today and Outlook

Through continuous development and technology upgrades, the Dan field has evolved from a conventional early-stage development into a mature, highly optimised asset.

Ongoing reservoir management, well optimisation, and infrastructure integration ensure that Dan remains a key contributor to Danish oil and gas production.
